Thread. 1873-2025 · American four-wall, One-wall (small and big ball), Irish 60x30 (hardball and softball), 40x20 and international four-wall.

American handball's rules were written in turn by whoever could make a stake match stand: the court keeper's custom (Casey's 1875 account), a sporting publisher (Ed. James's Manual of Sporting Rules, 1873, reprinted by Spalding in 1886), a newspaper (the Sun, which reprinted that code as the 'set rules' in 1889 and reformed it in 1890, adopted by club resolution), a publisher (Spalding's Deshong, Egan and Brokaw books), a federation that first adopted a newspaper's code (A.A.U., 1896) and only in 1920 drafted its own, and finally a players' association (USHA, 1951) whose rules now live in board minutes and a web page. Ireland's line is shorter and institutional from the start (GAA 1884, Irish Handball Council 1924, GAA Handball), but its newest codes are borrowed USHA text. Rules follow the body that runs the championship, and the championship follows the money or the membership.

## The take

The received history ('the AAU codified the rules in 1897') is wrong in the detail that matters: the first printed American code was a sporting publisher's (1873), a newspaper gave it currency and reformed it, and the federation adopted it. The pattern repeats, with a correction: the USHA inherited the A.A.U.'s game and a few phrases, not its text (the A.A.U.'s 1931 book and the USHA's 1990 rules share 5.7% of their five-word runs); the GAA did copy the USHA's text (84.7% of the five-word runs of its 2019 one-wall document). Nobody has written handball rules from nothing since 1919, and perhaps not then.

## What the sources do not show

- Who wrote the 1873 James code ([H-111](https://handball.theperfectship.com/history/open-questions/#H-111.md): possibly taken from the New York Clipper), who put it in the Sun in 1889 ([H-89](https://handball.theperfectship.com/history/open-questions/#H-89.md)), and whether the 1890-91 reformed text was ever printed ([H-91](https://handball.theperfectship.com/history/open-questions/#H-91.md)).
- The A.A.U.'s rules between 1897 and 1903 ([H-14](https://handball.theperfectship.com/history/open-questions/#H-14.md)) and between 1903 and 1920 ([H-15](https://handball.theperfectship.com/history/open-questions/#H-15.md)): no text, no minutes.
- A.A.U. annual-meeting minutes for 1896, 1919, 1921, 1922 and 1927: the adoption votes are known only from press notices or the printed heading.
- American rule texts 1932-1989: registrations, catalog records and seller photographs only (A.A.U. to 1962 and 1983 by citation, Y.M.C.A. 1940 and 1952, unified 1960-68); the USHA's own texts begin in 1990 in this record.
- The 1958/59 unification and the 1978 A.A.U. exit ([H-03](https://handball.theperfectship.com/history/open-questions/#H-03.md), [H-19](https://handball.theperfectship.com/history/open-questions/#H-19.md), [H-04](https://handball.theperfectship.com/history/open-questions/#H-04.md), [H-107](https://handball.theperfectship.com/history/open-questions/#H-107.md)): seller photographs and secondary pages; the Jewish Welfare Board as a co-author has no other record.
- Irish rule-making 1903-2009: three catalog or bibliography entries (1963, 1997) and one research-only booklet (2009); no GAA or Council minutes; the GAA's own texts are untranscribed.
